The CNC control from VDS, a combination of PLC and PC

    The XPCNC control comprises an industrial PC in a (TCPIP) network with the PLC. The industrial PC (IPC) communicates with the PLC that controls the actual movements of the motors. Communication consists on the one hand of the visualisation of information (numerical and graphic information), and on the other hand this PC offers the user the option of entering data for settings or parameters. Visualisation is on an industrial screen and entering data is by using a robust keyboard or a mouse.

    The heart of the XPCNC control is actually the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), and more specifically the CPU (Central Processing Unit) of the PLC. This takes care of the logic for the control of all inputs and outputs and the movements of the motors. The CPU communicates with the IPC through an Ethernet connection - the interface to the user.

    The industrial PC (IPC) runs under Windows Embedded and is as easy to operate as an ordinary PC.

  • B & R servo motors

    B & R servo motors

    B&R itself has a complete range of servo motors, ranging from small models to very large and powerful versions. These motors are powered by intelligent drives that are directly controlled by the PLC CPU.

  • Other servo motors

    Other servo motors

    The XPCNC control can also be used with motors of other brands. In this case the motor drives are controlled by analogue signals and the position encoders are read by encoder modules. This is less of an option for new applications, but it is ideal for the renewal of the control on existing machines (RETROFIT)!

  • Stepping motors

    Stepping motors

    Stepping motors can also be used, even in combination with servo motors. Stepping motors are mainly used with a relatively small load as a less expensive alternative. It is sensible to provide encoder feedback on the stepping motor so any skipping of steps can be immediately detected by the control.

    On the control cabinet there is a control panel with push-buttons and potentiometers for the most essential functions: synchronising and jogging of the axes, start and stop of automatic operation, emergency stop with reset, feed speed and milling spindle speed. A number of signal lights also indicate certain situations: emergency stop, synchronisation ready, automatic run in progress, etc.

    A 19" industrial screen works as screen for the built-in IPC. In Windows full screen mode the operating system fills the complete screen and is also always used this way.

  • Keyboard and mouse

    To enter parameters and settings the user has a keyboard and mouse as customary in a Windows environment. This is just the same as with a desktop PC.

    Our all-round processing centres are provided with an XPCNC control. The machines are purchased in Taiwan and arrive at VDS without control cabinet. There are also no driving motors on arrival. We adapt the cabling and install our own B&R servo motors. Our XPCNC control cabinet is then connected to the machine. PLC modules are even fitted on the machine.

    This 2-axis system (X, Z) is used for machining very large round parts in soft packaging material (polystyrene). The highly specific machine was built by the customer himself. The implementation of our XPCNC control accordingly took place in full consultation and in line with the given specifications.

  • Thread-cutting machine

    The construction was designed for sawing blocks of polystyrene. Sawing takes place with a wire driven by an asynchronous motor operated by a frequency controller. The control system is therefore also 2-axis, being in the X and Z directions. This special machine was developed by the customer himself and our XPCNC control was built entirely in consultation.

  • Glass cutting machine

    Glass cutting machine

    An X/Y glass cutting machine was fully overhauled and given a new control system. All wiring was removed from the machine and it was cleaned. Then the mechanics were controlled and correctly set. New driving motors were assembled, a control cabinet was put together, the machine was rewired and the control cabinet re-connected. Finally, user-friendly software was developed for both operation and for the preparation of the cutting patterns.
